THE HISTORY

LGBTQ Moray began in 2009, when a small group of local LGBTQ+ people recognized the need for connection, friendship and a safe space within Moray.

The group was founded following an initial meeting at Elgin Library by Tim Saxon, Adrian Hutcheon and Katie Gervaise. Their aim was simple: to create a welcoming community where LGBTQ+ people could meet without fear of judgement and know they were not alone.

Early social gatherings took place in venues across Elgin and Forres, including TimeOut Café and The Mosset Tavern. These informal meetups quickly grew into a supportive network, bringing together people from across Moray who shared similar experiences and wanted to build a stronger, more visible LGBTQ+ community.

As the years passed, the community expanded beyond social events. Volunteers developed support networks, organized community activities and helped lay the foundations for future LGBTQ+ organizations and initiatives across Moray. This work also contributed to the development of dedicated support for young people, including projects such as Schools Out.

Today, LGBTQ Moray represents more than just a group—it reflects the resilience, determination and compassion of the many volunteers and community members who have worked to ensure LGBTQ+ people in Moray are seen, supported and celebrated. Their efforts have helped transform a handful of informal gatherings into a lasting legacy of inclusion, visibility and pride.
